As a child, I always knew that I wanted to start my own business. I watched other small businesses make it when I was growing up in a very small town with a population of less than 5,000. That’s what you have in small towns, I mean, truly small towns. No big box stores. No Home Depot. No Wal-Mart. No Lowes. Small business owners who made it on their own. I liked that. This was and currently is the American Dream to me. To build something with your own two hands, the sweat of your brow, and see that your idea, your hard work was a success.
After spending 20 years in the corporate world as an expert in contact center integration, I began my quest to start a landscaping company while working as a Managing Consultant with IBM. Don't get me wrong, I loved being an IBM'er and I especially loved working with the brightest minds in the industry. I needed a change. I needed to do something for me.
My experience with landscaping and lawn care comes naturally, or rather, was taught to me at a very young age. When I was a child in the seventies, my parents believed in chores and discipline. Interchangeable, I think. With discipline came chores and sometimes, with chores came discipline. We had approximately five acres of landscaped property in South Carolina and we did all of the work ourselves. We were the labor! This was before the home invasion of what I call the electronic babysitter – the computer, the internet, and video games. My earliest memory of ‘working in the yard’ was at age six when my mother taught me the proper techniques for pruning roses. I can’t say that I was perfect at age six, nor did I care for the thorns, but combine this with another fifteen years of more fundamental pruning, planting, mulching, landscaping beds, fertilizing and mowing our lawn, being taught how to properly handle and apply pesticides, and having a love and appreciation for working with my hands in the dirt was the basis to continue my endeavor in the landscaping industry.
